How are you?

Hello, this is Seung.  It has been some time since I updated (last one was in August...time really flies).  I hope that you and your family are well, wherever you are.

So far, I have received eleven chemo sessions.  My last one was on November 6.  What happened since then?

  • My weight is at 176.7 pounds!  My weight at the first chemo session was 148 pounds.  I hope that I don't gain too much (bad) weight.
  • My CEA (carcinoembryonic antigen) is at 260.
  • I had to delay my 8th chemo session due to the low white-blood cell count.
  • I had to delay my 9th chemo session due to the low platelets.
  • I'm not sure if it is due to having low platelets, I have been feeling more tired.
  • My hands and feet have tingling feelings.  I learned that it is called neuropathy, basically my nerves are being damaged due to chemo.  I hope that it is not permanent.
  • My hair is growing back!

Since my treatment started, the most frequent (and obvious) questions that I have been asked is "How are you?"  Before I found out about my condition, I often answered this question with a casual response of "Oh, I'm fine" or "I'm good."  But now, that question helps me to slow down my racing mind and reflect on what my family and I are going through, remember how gracious God is, know that nothing is guaranteed, be grateful for this extended time, and take nothing for granted.  It is a simple question, yet it can be a helpful way to slow down life and think about life.

So, how are you? I hope that you have someone in your life to ask you this question.  I want to know how you are, what's going on in your life, and remind us that God is good, despite our circumstances and conditions.

Some gratitudes include:

  • My wife who loves me and asks me "How are you?"
  • Our first son maturing through challenges in life
  • Our second son who reminds me of our heavenly Father's love in his discipline
  • Our third son receiving baptism
  • Having enough energy to go out for a walk everyday (and catch some Pokemons with my sons)
  • Going to trick or treating for the first time with my two big kids, where I dressed up as Ash Ketchum
  • Being able to join a pastoral staff meeting, followed by a birthday lunch and ice cream with other pastors
  • My mother-in-law cooking a delicious 우거지 갈비탕 (dried cabbage short rib soup)
  • My father-in-law playing with O
  • Friends who bring my favorite meal and stay for hours of fellowship
  • My church
  • Those who I don't know or haven't met, yet are praying for me

Prayer Requests

  1. I am set for another CT scan after 12th round of chemo. Esther and I wish for a significant healing, yet we are cautious to hope. Pray for our hearts to be filled with gratitude continually and my tumors to shrink (or disappear if possible).
  2. Esther had a scare with high fever. Please pray for her to be healthy (in everyway), while taking care of everything around the house.
  3. Our sons to be ground in Christ

Thanks for being on this journey with us.
